Changing Doctors

I haven’t been ecstatic about the pediatrician’s office we chose for Jemma. Nothing huge has happened, I just feel like I should be getting more for the amount we pay (both out of pocket and through insurance). I’m probably gauging things off of my excellent midwifery care – lots of time, care and education. But isn’t that how all health care should be?
All that to say, we’re meeting with a naturopathic family practice this coming Friday. He has come on high recommendation from a few sources and I’m hopeful that we’ll really click. These are my hopes:

  • Knowledge of homeopathic remedies
  • Non-alarmist
  • Focus on wellness

At our current doctor I always feel like I need to take their advice and research the details before following through. Usually I end up disagreeing with their recommendation. Like these random iron supplements he wanted to put Jemma on when their is a ton of research showing that the majority of babies are able to sustain their iron levels until 6-12 months. I really want to connect with a doctor who we trust so I can ask questions, take advice and learn more about keeping my family well and treating our occasional illnesses.

What do you think are the key qualities of a doctor?
What do you like about your pediatrician or family doctor?
Have you ever changed doctors to find a better fit?

i love the boys' pediatrician (now.) when gage was born i was really insecure in my abilities to be a good mother, and i felt intimidated by his doctor. but i really like him now. he's friendly and easy to talk to, and i'm not sure why i didn't like him in the beginning. i'm sure it's just me that's changed.but i don't blame you for wanting a different doctor. you've got to find the perfect fit for gemma!

We haven't changed doctors, but fortunately, I picked a very laid back doc. When my littlest was ill and we didn't know or couldn't find the cause we debated putting her on a very powerful antibiotic just in case it was meningitis or something terrible. I was concerned about the antibiotic – what if this was nothing? In the end, he left the decision up to me with the caveat that if we didn't do the antibiotic then I bring her back first thing in the morning to have her re-evaluated. I did just that. I love that he gave me some control and that he wasn't forcing medicine on me. Plus – we never wait longer than 5 min. in the waiting room and that is huge especially with teh germ factor and bringing siblings along for the ride too!
