Two and Half

Half birthdays have always been a celebration around here.
Jemma’s second was no exception. I even cancelled her dentist appointment and took her for “pink birthday cake” which she had been incessantly requesting after watching a birthday episode of Dora. In anticipation for her dentist appointment we had been talking about the teeth doctor and how they count and clean your teeth and every time we left home she would anxiously ask, “Teef dod-or?” After assuring her that, no, the teeth doctor was not in her near future, she relaxed and enjoyed her birthday cake in the form of her first Starbuck’s cake pop. And she learned to so sweetly respond, “Two and half” when asked how old she is now :)

I hate to bore you all with Jem’s little milestone list, but her baby book ended at a year, so this is where all her cute words and stories get logged :) Oh, and her stats … at 2 1/2 she is approximately 32 pounds and 37 inches.

UNIQUE WORDS + PHRASES
  • Zebras are “zebbies”
  • Knows her first and last name
  • Knows that I am Gretchen and her Dad is Dominic
  • Can count to 12, but skips 7 every time
  • Yells, “Mama’s home!” or “Daddy’s home!” and runs to us with a big hug when we return, even if it’s just from the garage :)
  • Daddy goes to “wert” every day
  • Has just recently started saying Max with an “x” syllable instead of just “Ma”
  • When she is in a different room I’ll yell, “Jemma, where are you?” and she responds, “I’m here, Mama!!!!”
  • Says, “I try, I do it!”, “It’s mine, it’s Jemmie’s!” and “That’s better!” often
  • Poop is “poot” and when she toots it’s called a “fluff”

LOVES

  • Hemp milk and watered down apple juice
  • Singing the ABC’s, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Rain Rain Go Away and this weird counting song I made up
  • Applesauce and anything “choc-a-lit”
  • Chipotle burrito bowl and salty chips
  • Bubbles, slide and baths
  • Obsessed with going to church, she calls it “Jemma’s church” and asks if we can go every day. Yep, looks like we found a good kid’s program!
  • Picking out her own clothes – pajamas are a favorite followed by anything with an animal on it, sometimes she’ll allow flower prints
  • The color purple
  • Taking baths, she especially loves to lay on her tummy and “swim”
  • Her collection of stuffed animals: brown dog, black dog (which is bigger in size and is sometimes called “mama dog”), doll (sometimes called Molly), baby, a hedgehog named Jack because it looks like her aunt’s hamster named Jack, raccoon, fox and a bear named Bruce
  • Going to the store which she calls the “storn”
  • Wearing her frog or red rain boots
  • Pretend wrestling with Max, he crawls on her and she rolls him off and they laugh and laugh and laugh
  • Visiting friends, which is anyone she has fun with
  • Reading “Five Minutes Peace” – she narrates the whole thing and I need to get it on video stat
  • Watching Super Why, Dora, Arthur and Caillou
  • When I carry her and Max at the say time, she says “one baby” and points to herself and then “two babies” and points to Max

Jemma only has one major dislike and that’s the idea of using the potty which I am choosing not to push, her time will come. She is the biggest joy in my life – so full of zest and compassion. I love her heart and learn so much from her every day. Two and a half is plain ol’ awesome. Three will be fabulous I’m sure, but for now, I’m happy relishing in this middle point.

Gretchen, I get the impression that Jemma is not the typical 2 year old and is not going through the "terrible twos"? I have a 27 month old daughter (and a 6 week old) and she is so extremely emotional, throws tantrums every day and it can sometimes be scary how much yelling and crying she does. Just wondering if you ever deal with 2 year old tantrums, and if so how do you deal with them (could be a blog post idea.) :)
