Don’t Ever Buy Boxed Brownie Mix Again

I’ll admit, I have a little bit of a sweet tooth. I make it a habit to keep some type of dessert on hand, because in the evenings when all is quiet nothing satisfies like a morsel of chocolate. Or two morsels if I’m being completely honest. In order to save myself a little bit of money on my dessert schemes I’ve started making my own brownie mix. Say what?

You see, a box of brownie mix is at least $1.50; $4+ if I splurge on the fancy stuff. So, it only makes sense to spend a few minutes making my own package that costs a mere 30-50 cents. You can too! Here’s how:

Make at Home Brownie Mix

Ingredients and Supplies

  • Resealable sandwich size plastic bag
  • Permanent marker
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/3 cocoa
  • 1/3 cup chocolate chips
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder

Directions

  • On the plastic bag, write: “Add 2 eggs, 1/2 cup oil, 1 teaspoon vanilla and bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes”.
  • Place all dry ingredients in the bag, seal, and store in your pantry for your next dessert craving!

A few memos … I’ve tried olive oil, vegetable oil, and melted coconut oil. They all work great! The coconut oil is a super healthy option and gives the brownies a tropical flair. Also, if you’re interested in making your own vanilla extract check out my recent DIY. I know, I know, between making your own brownie mix AND vanilla you’re going to turn into Susie Homemaker. Take it one step at a time if you must :)

Last, but not least, when bagging up your brownie mix shoot for the stars and prep at least 4. That way, when you forget to plan dessert for your daughter’s 2nd birthday, sheepish grin, you’ll have something ready to go.
