2 Weeks of Wonderful

My darling girl is 2 weeks old. It is amazing how fast time has already gone. She doesn’t have the newborn glow any more; she is turning into a little baby girl. Growing like a weed, I tell ya!

In the last week we have gotten into more of a schedule. We get up around 9am; she eats and has a hefty burp or two. Keep in mind that getting up is very different than waking up … we wake up multiple times in the wee hours still. Jemma hangs out in her bouncer while I shower. Sometimes she naps, sometimes she “talks” to me while I get ready. Moving the bouncer into the bathroom has been a genius idea (thanks, Mom). Then we pick out an outfit for her and head downstairs for breakfast. Jemma always wear something cuter than me :) Jem eats again while I watch a little TV. By now it’s 11 am or so and she is ready for her morning nap. I should be considering lunch, but no … I’m still at breakfast at this point.

When I’m being good, I nap with her. When I’m being an uber-productive-crazy mama I buzz around the house working on projects while she snoozes. She gets a good 2-3 hours in and is then awake for most of the afternoon. We’ve had some successful trips to town for a brief errand or two, but mostly we like to hang out at home snuggling on the couch or wrapped up in the Moby. She eats again and has another long nap in the evening.

Dressed warm and ready for errands

I stare at her alot and sprinkle in little kisses on her forehead and cheeks. I never thought I could be so in love. Dominic agrees. The other night he said he didn’t know he could have his love multiply so much (meaning he loves both Jem and I to pieces).
.
Daddy gets home from work around 5 or 6 pm and we have dinner together. We’ve had some amazing friends bring us meals and Aunt Hannah has cooked every time she has come for a visit … most recently was butternut squash risotto. Freak out … it is delicious.
.

Aunt Hannah was so excited to strap Jemma on and show her the ropes in the kitchen

Jemma is currently sleeping on my chest. I love her little breathes and sleeping snorts. Soon we’ll head upstairs and she’ll chill in her bouncer while I read in the bath. I took so many baths while pregnant I think she got used to the sound of the fan and bath jets … it lulls her into a peaceful existence. I started a book on attachment parenting and it has been wonderful bath reading.
.
We usually snuggle into bed around 10 or 11 pm and she’ll sleep until 1 or 2 am. We have been successfully side-lying nursing at night so it isn’t too much of a disturbance. She doesn’t really cry when she wakes up, just starts rooting around and “talking” so I know she is ready for her grub :) After eating, she’ll burp and we’ll change her diaper then fall back asleep for another 2-4 hours. We are usually awake when Daddy gets up for work between 5 and 6 am. Eating again, of course and then drifting off for a few more hours as the sun comes up.

Life is lovely with a lovely little baby by your side.

She purses her lips in the sweetest way when she is napping

A few other Week 2 Memos …

  • We have had a few blow outs, but I’m quickly learning how to keep those under control
  • We have started incorporating cloth diapers; I started with disposables while she had meconium and just finished the newborn size pack
  • I captured her first booger today
  • I’m functioning much better than expected on intermittent sleep
  • My stitches are healing well, but darn that is not a fun place to be stitched
  • Nursing is SO CONVENIENT, I’ve had a bit of trouble with a milk blister, but all in all nursing has been going great
  • Jemma loves the bouncer and swing, but most of all she loves to be held
  • Channel 900 and something on Comcast are music stations, Jemma loves “Soundscapes” and naps to it quite often
  • Clipping her nails while she is sleeping is 100 times easier than when she is awake
  • I ordered/finished her birth announcements … WHICH I LOVE and will post soon
Everyone was right. This whole motherhood thing is the best. It definitely isn’t easy, but it is the most rewarding experience I could imagine.

Wow. 2 weeks old already. She's an absolute doll. While nursing does seem inconvenient at times…i promise you that it is 10x more convenient than bottle feeding :)
