Baby #2 — How I Found Out

On December 8th Jemma and I made a little trek to Target. We were shopping for stocking stuffers and since Dollar Tree is next door I planned to pick up a few pregnancy tests, because, well, they are only $1 there and I don’t feel guilty taking them willy nilly when they are only $1.

I didn’t think I was pregnant so the test wasn’t an urgent purchase. I just wanted to have some on hand since I’d had a quasi-period at the end of October – 13 months postpartum.

Come to find out, Dollar Tree was out of tests. WHAT?!?!? Since when does the Dollar Tree not stay stocked up on pregnancy tests? Don’t they know that budget-friendly mamas need a few every once in awhile?

Fast forward to December 13th and we were at Trader Joe’s which also has a Dollar Tree next door. See, it’s a sign that I get my pregnancy tests at Dollar Tree because they are seriously next door to everything I frequent. Luckily, there were 3 tests left at this Dollar Tree – 3 was enough for me! I bought them all. $3 well spent.

Wednesday morning, the 14th, I decided to take a test. Here’s why …

  • Last sign of a cycle was October 28th
  • Nips have been super sore while pumping (because silly Jemma never started nursing again after her strike and I figured I might as well pump as long as I was producing milk)
  • I had that sneaky feeling and just wanted to be sure, so much so that I had asked to skip getting x-rays at my dentist appointment on the previous Monday

I fully expected it to be negative. Postpartum periods are a fickle thing and not usually regular or a solid indicator of much. I’d been pumping for almost 2 months and who’s nips wouldn’t be sore after that?

But then, this …
Yep! 2 lines mean there is a baby on their way!
I scooped up Jemma and whispered, “You’re going to be a sissy!”

She giggled and snuggled her head into my shoulder. We said a prayer for our little baby growing inside of me – for safety, health, and for them to feel our love and joy over their impending arrival. My Christmas wish that I thought wouldn’t be, came true. We’re expecting a baby in Summer 2012!

So happy for you and your family! Just curious…were you pregnant when jemma had her strike and ultimately stopped nursing? If so, maybe that was the reason for the sudden weaning? Ive read some babies will strike because of that.

What a fun story! Our story with #2 was very similar. I love Dollar Store preggo tests! Keep one in the cabinet all the time!

I totally wondering that in the beginning, but my dating ultrasound proved different. So, unless she got a random vibe that a sibling would soon be on its way – I still have no explanation other than that she was just ready to be done.

Are you planning to continue pumping throughout your pregnancy for miss. Jemma? Just wondering what your thoughts are on this?

I pumped until the end of December and then decided to stop. I had a large stash in the freezer, enough that I think she'll have 5-8 ounces of breastmilk every day until she is at least 18 months old. Pumping was getting uncomfortable and tiresome and it just felt like the right time to stop so my body could focus on growing our new baby. I had always hoped to tandem nurse, but nursing and pumping were so different for me. Maybe tandem will come into play with #2 and #3 :)

If you look on peeonastick.com, they actually have ratings of different pregnancy tests and everything. The ones at the dollar store are actually some of the most sensitive kind and have a low false positive rate. They're my favorite. :-D
