Tiny Whispers

Out of the dark I feel a tiny hand reach across my neck. Jemma’s fingers curl into my skin and I hear a deep sigh. And then, these words, “I love you Mommy”. My heart swells as I whisper back, “I love you too.”

She squeezes my neck in acknowledgement and shuffles her body closer to mine. Ten minutes ago she had tiptoed from her bed and into mine where I laid nursing Max to sleep. She slithered under the covers and I felt whole holding both of my babies in my arms as they fell into sleep.

Then, out of the blue, “I had fun with you at Christmas”. Smiles in the dark. “I had fun too,” I reply. I hugged her and relished in our holiday memories. Christmas was lovely, a truly blessed ending to a wonderful year. Without skipping a beat she says, “I have a Dora lunchbox, you know … And I really love my famy (family)  so much.”

And that, my friends, is how conversations with a three year old go. Lots of feeling and discoveries and favorite things. I cherish these quiet moments in the night, when eyes are supposed to be closed, but instead, we visit. These are the moments we will both always hold dear.
