A Penny Saved Is a Penny Earned | Homemade Laundry Soap

Each month for the rest of 2012 I’ll be featuring ways you can be a bit more frugal. As Ben Franklin said, “A penny saved is a penny earned.” And who doesn’t like to have a few extra pennies around :)

I followed this recipe for homemade laundry detergent and have been using it for almost 4 months now – it is SUPER! I’ve never been one for powder, but have zero complaints about this concoction. Especially, the price … crazy affordable.

When I’m out, I’m planning to try out a liquid recipe (just for comparison) as well as a recipe eliminates borax.

Have you made your own household cleaning supplies? Please share!

was it pretty easy to make?

I would highly recommend using an Organic Bar of soap as the Fels Naptha Bar is made with ingredients no better than the chemical cousins found in the laundry aisle!

LOVE this idea- will definitely have to try it – was it hard to make?

Hardest part was grating the soap, but other than that … super easy :)

I was wondering about that … is there a particular brand you would recommend? Would Dr. Bronners bar soap work?

  6. ThatMamaGretchen says

Yep! Probably took only 15 or 20 min :)

Is this homemade soap safe for cloth diapers? I have wanted to try it – but dont want to make my laundry routine more complicated with using 2 soaps.

My guess would be no … but I can't say for sure. I feel like I read about someone who uses it for cloth, but I try to stick with the cloth only detergents since I'm needing my cloth dipes to last … well, forever! :)

These are the ingredients in the Fels Naptha Soap: Soap (sodium tallowate*, sodium cocoate* (or) sodium palmate kernelate*, and sodium palmate*), water, talc, cocnut acid*, palm acid*, tallow acid*, PEG-6 methyl ether, glycerin, sorbitol, sodium chloride, pentasodium pentetate and/or tetrasodium etidronate, titatium dioxide, fragrance, Acid Orange (CI 20170), Acid yellow 73 (ci43350) I would be particularly concerned about not only the Talc (which is a reproductive disruptor and cancer causing agent especially for childrens reproductive organs)…But the Acid Orange & Acid Yellow are synthetic dyes made in China where regulations on the dyes origin is not regulated!! Synthetic chemicals such as these acids are not healthy at all for your skin! When clothes are washed in it, the residue of the chemicals live on the fibers which then are absorbed into the skin which touches the fabric!! NOT GOOD!!

I wanted to try making my own detergent, but from what I've read they're not cloth diaper safe. Have you had any problems with that?

Oh ignore my last comment. I just read this. :-P
