Guest Post: Little Sprout Growing

Elsie of Little Sprout Growing is one of my real life friends. I get tons of crafty inspiration from her and she recently hosted our dear friend’s baby shower. Hello! My name is Elsie and I’m honored to be stopping by today and sharing a little bit with you today. I have a 2 ½ year old son, Malachi, who is all boy and more fun than I could ever have imagined. I blog about my family, books I’m reading, craft projects I attempt and any other random things I deem blog-worthy at the moment. =)

I thought that since Gretchen is on vacation, I’d share a few tips on taking a little one on vacation with you. Apparently when I was little, my dad was firmly against going on any type of trip or vacation because he thought it would be too difficult. I think there are a lot of people out there who would agree. But with a little planning, you can take your young children on trips AND actually survive enjoy it!

Do Your Research
You know your child better than anyone else. While researching, you should try to accommodate their personality as much as possible.

There are some great websites out there like TravelMamas.com or WeJustGotBack.com that outline family packing lists, activities, helpful products and travel tips. I also like to check out Listmania on Amazon for tips.

Plan Ahead
Don’t go out the day before and think you’re going to be ready for a trip with a little one. Start early.

Last year we took a six hour plane flight to Texas for a family reunion. Whew! I was stressed! My son was 19-months-old and I wasn’t sure how it was going to go. I started early looking at different products out there, researching what others did and then purchasing what I thought would be helpful. Some things I bought from Etsy or Amazon, so I was glad that I started looking early. I also found that disposable bibs, changing pads and wipes were life-savers. One of my favorite purchases? This I Spy Travel Toy from aebaby on Etsy.

Stick to Your Routines
Whether you’re flying or going on a road trip, attempt to keep your regular routines. This can be difficult, especially if you are traveling with or visiting other people, but naptimes and bedtimes are important – almost more important than usual because everything is disrupted. Plan enough breaks while driving to let little ones run around burn off some energy.

Still Not Convinced?
Finally, if you’re too nervous to go on a long trip – go camping! It’s simple, cheap and fun! We’ve been camping every year since Malachi was born – starting when he was 4-months-old! He loves it because we plan for him to get dirty and messy and he gets to experience things like campfires, s’mores and hiking, which are exciting for him. Plus, it’s slower paced, which means it’s easier to keep to routines like naptimes and bedtimes.
